Hey everyone. Bit of a different question. I grew up in Colusa County and moved away for work about fifteen years ago, and my parents are still there. I try to keep up but the local paper situation is not what it was, and my parents are not the type to volunteer information about anything until it is already a problem. I would like to know what is going on in the area without calling every day. Anyone dealing with a similar situation with family in a small county? They are both in their late seventies and still living independently, which is exactly why I worry about it.

Very familiar situation, and you are describing the reason a lot of people end up out of the loop about their hometown. Two things helped me. First, a county news feed so I have context before I call, it is easier to ask about something specific than to get a general answer. I use CA Today https://catoday.news/colusa-county , for that. Second, get yourself on the same emergency alert list your parents should be on, so you hear about evacuations or outages at the same time they do rather than after. Tip: call on a schedule rather than when something is wrong, people share more when the conversation is not an interrogation. And make sure you are listed as a contact on their utility account, otherwise nobody tells you when the power has been out for two days.
