Currently working on my quantity surveying dissertation topics and honestly didn’t realise how interesting (and stressful) picking a topic could be. I decided to focus on how digital tools like BIM, cost management software, and automation are changing the role of quantity surveyors in today’s construction industry. With everything moving towards digital transformation, it felt like a relevant and practical area to explore rather than sticking to something too traditional.
The dissertation looks at whether these tools actually improve cost accuracy, efficiency, and decision-making, or if they bring new challenges like skill gaps and resistance to change. It’s been a real learning experience so far, especially understanding how the QS role is evolving and what future professionals might need to stay competitive. Sharing this in case it helps anyone else who’s stuck choosing a dissertation topic!
