How effective is window film at reducing heat and energy bills?

Last summer, my apartment got unbearably hot in the afternoon sun. Someone recommended window film to cut down on the heat, but I wasn’t sure if it really works or just sounds like a gimmick. Has anyone noticed a real difference in their cooling bills after installing windowfilm?

I installed window film myself using some detailed instructions from windowfilm and noticed the room stayed cooler by a good margin. Over a few months, my AC bill dropped slightly, which was a nice bonus. I’d say it’s worth the effort, especially if you live somewhere with strong sun exposure.
